Greta grew up in
Mechanicsburg, PA and began playing in the orchestra in fourth grade. In high
school, Greta studied cello with Nancy Baun of the Eaken Piano Trio, and in addition to performing
in her high school orchestra she performed in the Dickinson College Orchestra,
the Messiah College Orchestra, the Harrisburg Youth Symphony Orchestra and a
string quartet at Dickinson College. Greta received a full cello
scholarship to West Virginia University to study cello and string music
education. She studied with cellist William Skidmore, performed in the
WVU Symphony under Lawrence Christianson and studied violin and viola
pedagogy. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2002 with a bachelors degree
in Music Education.
Upon graduating, Greta
taught string orchestra in Rising Sun, MD to students in grades 4-12. Her
students performed in county and state events and competed at solo and chamber
ensemble festivals in several different states. Greta also coached a
string quartet, taught private lessons, performed in weddings and started a
youth orchestra.
In 2007 Greta moved to
Middletown, DE to start a brand new orchestra program in Appoquinimink
Schools. After 4 years, the program grew to over 400 members in the
district and became a successful addition to the music program. In
addition to teaching private lessons and performing in a string trio, Greta
enjoys cooking, decorating and spending time with her husband James and their
toddler Landon.
Greta's mission
is to bring the beauty and excitement of orchestral instruments to children.
By learning a musical instrument, students learn respect and love for the
arts; as well as creativity, responsibility, time management and perseverance.
They also gain confidence and sense of self. She looks forward to
working with each student to help them improve on their instrument while having
fun! She encourages her students to set short and long term goals as well
as explore different genres of music and performance styles. Students are able
to see their growth as well as find their personal music preferences and are
also taught to compose their own music!
