Joyce Harkey began studying the piano at the tender age of 6, and while at Mansfield University, studied with the late Dr.
William Goode. After graduation, she
studied piano with Margaret Lai at the Delaware School of Music, and was
awarded the Ella Hanson Gebhart Memorial Scholarship for continuing education.
Joyce has taught privately in the Delaware
area for the last 17 years, taking time off after the births of each of her 5
children. In addition to teaching
privately, Ms. Harkey has taught general music, theory, music history and
sightsinging to students in traditional classroom as well as home-school
settings.
Her students have been accepted by audition into Cab
Calloway School
for the Arts, and University
of Delaware. She enjoys teaching young beginners and
offers a free evaluation for readiness. In
addition to school-aged students, Ms. Harkey has significant experience with
adult students, both beginners and those who wish to improve existing skills.
She is currently active on the Pike
Creek Bible
Church worship ministry, plays
weddings and other events, and accompanies for choirs and local musicians. She is a member of the Delaware State Music
Teacher’s Association.
Ms. Harkey teaches Thursday and Fridays at the Kirkwood location at a rate
of $25/half hour payable monthly.
