An electric guitar is a type of guitar that uses pickups to convert the vibration of its steel-cored strings into electrical current, electric guitar is a electric string musical instrument which is then amplified. The signal that comes from the guitar is sometimes electronically altered to achieve various tonal effects prior to being fed into an amplifier, which produces the final sound.

The electric guitar was first used in jazz and has also long been used in many other popular styles of music, including almost all genres of rock and roll, country music, blues, ambient (or "new-age"), and even contemporary classical music.

Chris Malinowski Guitar Instruction

Gracefully thrown into teaching at the age of eleven by his father, Mal (owner of Newark's Mal's Music 1979-2003), guitar instruction has been an integral piece of Chris Mal's existence since 1981.

Each of Chris Mal's students is given a similar lesson structure, which includes: technique exercises (both fingering and picking), chord studies (basic and advanced), scale work (primary, intermediate, and professional), MUSIC READING and THEORY (all of his students read or will read), genre studies (Rock, Blues, Metal, Jazz, Folk, Country, Avant-Garde, Classical - this is the student's choice), improvisation and solo construction, and, ultimately, a guide through the process of crafting ORIGINAL MATERIAL, including vocal work and performance preparation.

Chris Mal's lessons are given with a sense of humor and without condescension, as he views all of his students as equals and friends, with the idea that he possesses nothing, musically, that they don't innately possess themselves.

Chris Mal doesn't believe in talent. He believes in DEDICATION. He aims to demystify the instrument for the student and to enable her/him to play comfortably and beyond, and, finally, to encourage the individual to honor her/his eccentricities regarding playing style and songwriting capability.

Chris Mal teaches ALL AGES at the Kirkwood Highway location, without question.

Chris Mal holds a Bachelor of Science in Cinema from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, where he won both writing and filmmaking awards.

When he is not teaching, he is crafting experimental films (see www.almsyousay.com), screenwriting, shooting still photographs, or running. He is the guitarist, singer, and main songwriter for the Avant-Garde Rock band, THE COLLINGWOOD, an act he's fronted since 1999. You can check out the website at myspace.com/thecollingwood.

Chris charges $25.00 per 1/2 hour lesson. Payment is taken 4 lesson blocks in advance, paid monthly.

Michael Martin Guitar Instructor

Mike began teaching guitar lessons in 1987, at age 16, through the guidance and encouragement of his instructor and musical mentor, Mal of Mal's Music in Newark, Delaware. Since then his experience has ranged from private and in-home lessons to group instruction in a classroom setting.

A typical lesson includes studies in picking and fingering technique, reading exercises in standard musical notation and chord studies. As a student progresses, he or she will move up to scale and position studies, intervals and arpeggios, and melodic and harmonic composition. As students begin to gain confidence and strength on the instrument, they may devote lesson time to learning specific songs or passages of their choosing. Mike finds people are often drawn to play guitar out of their appreciation for certain artists and musical styles, and he is here to guide students not only through the complexities of music theory, but also through the deeper journey of learning to play and create music he or she loves.

Once students have achieved a solid musical foundation, lessons often take on a more nuanced study of certain genres or techniques. A fan of many styles, Mike's knowledge is strongest in Classic Rock, Punk, Metal and Hard Rock, Blues, Country, and Classical music. He seeks to provide a fun, ego-free learning environment in which students may feel comfortable in the process of developing his or her musical skills. He will push for results, but never considers it his job to judge or look down upon anyone. Students of all ages are welcomed.

Outside the lesson studio, Mike enjoys carpentry, watching sports, writing and hanging out with his wife, Michelle, and friends in the home presided over by their two dogs, Izzy and Jake. Born and raised in Delaware, he has a Bachelor of Arts in English/Journalism from the U of D. He can usually be found writing, recording or performing music with one of a growing list of collaborators in his home studio. Mike has been singer/guitarist/songwriter in the rock/punk/metal band Deadlyne since 1988. Visit them at:

myspace.com/deadlynemusic on the web.

Mike charges $25.00 per 1/2 hour lesson. Payment is taken 4 lesson blocks in advance, paid monthly.
